160 Bunches of Pine Leaves Design Sobachoko, Koimari Sometsuke
Period: Late 18th to Early 19th Century, Edo Period
Condition: On the outside body, a few pinholes and Gosu pigment dots are seen. Just below the double lines near the bottom, there is a tiny glaze-missed spot. There are also a pinhole and a tiny glaze-missed spot on the inside wall. This is, however, a pretty Sobachoko on the whole with no cracks, chips or freckles.
Dia.: 8.2cm(top), 6.0cm (bot.) Hgt.: 6.2cm
Unlike typical "Pine-Bamboo-Plum" design often appears on Koimari porcelains as a mark and picture, the bunches of pine leaves are realistically drawn. In terms of the way of depiction and composition, there must be something that has to do with "Sheaves Design of Rice Plants" such as #144 and #154 in this gallery shop. Historically, both kinds were fired between 1780s and 1820s. There are some variations of those Sobachoko respectively, introduced on pictorial book. That suggests that both of the kinds were very popular Sobachoko in the period.
The Mikomi mark on the bottom inside is an insect. It is said tha the insect mark was at first drawn on platform area of porcelains at the "Higuchi Kiln" in Arita, and then it was being applied on Sobachoko Mikomi. Please compare the insect mark with the one on #47 Plate bottom. While the one on the plate does not have a tail, this Sobachoko mark has it. In addition, the Sobachoko insect has distinctive antennae. Aside from the comparison, there is a question that whether the insect mark drawn at the Higuchi Kiln was intended to be an insect or not.
